Secure Research Video

Suppose that one of the videos that you have made as a behavioural scientist ends up on YouTube, or falls into the hands of unauthorised persons. And yet there are still countless cases of video and associated scientific coding that is sent via an unsecured internet connection or that is stored on an USB stick stored in a drawer. Research data is sensitive and highly confidential and falls under the highest security class, namely “Level 4 – Secret: Information that would likely cause severe harm to individuals or the university if disclosed“.

Universities often do not have the option to store research video with strict security requirements that must be able to comply with security class 4 because existing educational video systems do not support this.

Beats is the video system built for universities and high schools and offers specific cloud applications and services that are too often unsupported.

specific cloud applications that the larger well-known parties often ignore. Secure Research Video is one of them.

Data security in SRV

Data can be secured in various ways:

  • By securing the transport of videos
  • By securing the storage of the video
  • By securing the video itself
  • By securing access to the video

Many current solutions implement secure transport and storage of data and who can view / use the data is determined by means of access control (login). However if any user with access decides to copy and move the data, then that user can “walk away” with the file, the video itself is usually not protected.

Beats Video Player

Digital Rights Management

DRM software is used to protect video. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management and prevents unauthorised access to video data unless the user has the key to “open” the footage in a player. The DRM technique is widely used by, for example, Netflix for “encrypting” their films and series. If you have the key, in this case, by subscribing to Netflix, you can watch the movies. Although Netflix is not research data, it is also data with a high level of value and hence security. Beats implements DRM for research data.

Video Coding

Once the video has been recorded and ingested in a secure manner into Beats, the scientist can get to work. The video is not only viewable, research coding can also be added to the video timeline. These can be dynamically created by the researcher for his / her team. Templates can be set-up per video for coding video sequences and intervals: specifying such things as categories, behaviours, descriptions, observations and scores

SRV coding application

The coding can of course be exported to statistical applications such as SPSS for further analysis.
